Vis is much quieter and the towns on the northern coast of Hvar are poles apart from Hvar town, as already identified. If you are staying to the north on Hvar, get the 2 hour ferry from Split into Stari Grad rather than the 1 hour catamaran into Hvar town plus a half hour bus / taxi transfer.
