Qualitative Research Definition Qualitative research is a type of study that focuses on gathering and analyzing data that is natural and interpretive in nature. In other words, it looks for an in-depth understanding of the social aspect within its natural setting.

Qualitative research involves the collection and analysis of narratives and/or open-ended observations through methodologies such as interviews, focus groups or ethnographies. Quantitative research uses measurable data to formulate facts and uncover patterns in research. Quantitative data collection methods are much more structured; they include various forms of surveys – online surveys, paper surveys, mobile surveys and kiosk surveys, face-to-face interviews, telephone interviews, longitudinal studies, website interceptors, online polls, and systematic observations. Quantitative research is relatively uncommon in socio-legal studies, which tend, on the whole, to make use of qualitative methodology or take a mixed methodological approach to empirical research. One exception to this was a large-scale randomised telephone survey carried out in the late 1990s in the United Kingdom.

This is in contrast to the questions of ‘how many’ or ‘how much’ that are sought to be answered by quantitative research, including epidemiologic studies and clinical trials. The word qualitative implies an emphasis on the qualities of entities and on processes and meanings that are not experimentally examined or measured [if measured at all] in terms of quantity, amount, intensity, or frequency. Qualitative research is defined as a market research method that focuses on obtaining data through open-ended and conversational communication.
